This week I want to reflect on a young person who is following her passion.

A couple of years ago, I would often call into the girls boarding house where my Mum works and hear this amazing sound from the common room. I couldn’t ignore it and had to go and listen for a while. This girl has a little something that you can’t explain, that soulful connection to the lyric that just draws you in and makes your day better from hearing her.

That young lady had a whirlwind year in 2013 and it is so exciting to see her follow her dream of being a recording artist. Yesterday, Mum and I went to see Ellie Lovegrove perform in the Garden of Unearthly Delights, it was great to witness Ellie making a connection with the audience through using her wonderful gift. She is a role model to young indigenous women (& to us all) and reminds us to follow your dream by giving things a go.

I love that Ellie took the chance by following her heart and auditioning for X Factor. Often the road to being a musician in the public eye is full of criticism, hard work, sacrifice and commitment. It requires the person to stay focussed on their dream no matter what. Yesterday, her growth was evident but it was just like the old days without the huge production, just her voice and a guitar – it was mesmerising.

Ellie’s audition song was On Fire (see the link below) and yesterday when she sang it, it connected straight to my core. Not only because she nailed it but because of the enormous courage and rollercoaster ride it must be from when she first sang it to the judges. Ellie has held herself with grace and it is exciting that she is launching forward with her career. It is wonderful that she is singing with Archie Roach and recording her own EP – I know that she is one to watch and no matter the amount of records sold we should celebrate the fact that more people get the chance to hear this exceptional voice.

So this week, I think that we can all learn something from Ellie’s experience – to take a risk, give things a go, use your gifts and do what you love. Let’s all strive to do this by recognising our strengths and stepping toward our own dreams.

Also make it your business to see Ellie live so you can experience her amazing gift for yourself – this girl is certainly on fire.

Have an awesome week

Bel
